Night
Shift.

You got the night guard job in the Backrooms office. There are two doors, six cameras, one desk lamp and not enough power. Something new shows up every night, and each one has one rule you need to learn. Last until 6 AM.

Start your shift

The game opens full-screen on this page. It is in real 3D, so a laptop or desktop works best, and headphones help a lot. New visitors first choose Home or School and accept the Rules, Terms and Privacy Policy. Your unlocked nights stay in this browser.

Objective

Survive from 12 AM to 6 AM. Each hour lasts about 45 seconds. Doors, hall lights, cameras and the lamp all use power. If power hits 0%, the lights die, the doors open and you have a few seconds before something finds you. Beat Night 5 to unlock Night 6.

Controls

  • Mouse to the screen edge, or A / D: look left and right.
  • Q / E: close or open the left / right door.
  • Hold Z / C: left / right hall light.
  • F: desk lamp on / off.
  • Space: cameras. Then 1–6 or click the map.
  • X: snap a photo. B: breaker panel.
  • R: reboot during a glitch. P: pause.
  • Touch: tap the left or right edge of the screen to look at that door, tap the middle to look back; DOOR, LIGHT and LAMP buttons on screen. Assist mode is on by default on phones.

One rule per creature

  • The Smiler (night 1): comes down the west hall. Teeth in the left doorway? Shut the left door.
  • The Hound (night 2): fast, but it can't move while you watch it on CAM 3 or CAM 4.
  • The Deathmoth (night 3): crawls through the vent toward your lamp. Turn the lamp off until it leaves.
  • The Crawler (night 4): never shows up on the hall cameras. Listen for scratching on the left or right.
  • The Glitch (night 5): the lights go purple. Press R before a door lock fails.

While you wait

  • The phone: the previous guard calls every night. His warnings are useful. His story gets worse.
  • Photos (X): with the cameras up, snap a creature for your evidence board. The first photo of each creature every night is worth the most.
  • Fuses (B): sometimes a fuse blows. The hall lights or one camera dies and power drains faster. Open the breaker and match the wires, but you can't see the doors while you do it.
  • Hidden ducks: a glow-in-the-dark rubber duck hides on one camera every night. Photograph it. Find all six to unlock Quack mode.

Extra modes

  • Custom Night: beat Night 3 to unlock it. Set each creature from 0 (off) to 20, then play one night. About 10 feels like Night 5. 20 is worse than Night 6.
  • Presets: Dog Days, Lights Out, Door Duty, Bad Wiring and Full House are ready-made custom nights. The menu shows which ones you have beaten.
  • Endless Shift: beat Night 5 to unlock it. The clock does not stop at 6 AM. Every hour the creatures get faster and you get 20% power back. Your score is how many hours you last, and the menu keeps your best.
  • The phone does not ring in these modes, and there is no duck to find.

Useful strategy

  • Don't keep the doors shut "just in case". That's how you run out of power at 4 AM.
  • The desk monitor shows the last camera you picked. Glance at it without lifting the tablet.
  • Tap the hall lights. Holding them down eats power.
  • Wear headphones. Almost every creature makes a sound before it reaches you.
